Today’s scientists are witnessing a striking shift in children’s vision, as myopia becomes more common and changing habits create new challenges for young eyes. Meanwhile, advances in screening and treatment are transforming how healthcare providers protect children’s sight.

A Generation in Focus

Childhood myopia (nearsightedness) has become one of the fastest-growing vision concerns worldwide, now affecting approximately one in three children and adolescents — and researchers expect prevalence to continue rising.
Genetics plays a major role, but daily habits may also contribute:
- Prolonged close-up viewing – Extended use of smartphones, tablets, and computers at close range may influence how the developing eye grows.
- Reduced exposure to natural daylight – Research shows that spending less time outdoors in natural light may increase the risk of childhood myopia.
- Digital eye strain – While distinct from myopia, digital eye strain can result from long periods of screen use, causing headaches, eye fatigue, dry eyes, and blurred vision. Persistent symptoms may signal an uncorrected vision problem or underlying condition.
Beyond Glasses

Treatment is evolving beyond traditional vision correction as specialists focus on slowing myopia progression. Children who develop myopia earlier tend to need stronger prescriptions later, while high myopia (severe nearsightedness) increases the risk of serious eye problems. Eye care professionals may recommend:
- Low-dose atropine eye drops – Prescription drops used once daily
- Myopia-control contact lenses – Specialized soft lenses that correct vision while helping slow progression
- Orthokeratology (ortho-k) – Overnight lenses that temporarily reshape the cornea

Seeing Past the Eye Chart

Children may not know they aren’t seeing clearly, making early screening especially important. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends vision assessment beginning in infancy, with instrument-based screening available at 12 and 24 months and routine vision screening at ages 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 15.
For preverbal or difficult-to-screen children, photoscreening requires minimal cooperation and can detect risk factors for amblyopia (lazy eye).
Vision screening may identify:
- Reduced visual acuity – Vision below the expected level for a child’s age
- Refractive errors – Including hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism (irregular corneal curvature)
- Eye alignment disorders – Including strabismus (crossed or misaligned eyes), a major risk factor for amblyopia
When to Look Deeper
Screening can flag potential concerns, but it does not replace a comprehensive eye exam.
Optometrists and ophthalmologists provide evaluation and ongoing care, while pediatric ophthalmologists specialize in complex childhood eye conditions.
Age also matters when interpreting screening results. The American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus recommends referral for visual acuity below 20/50 at ages 3–4, below 20/40 at ages 4–5, and below 20/32 at age 5 and older.
Keeping Eyes Safe at Play

Not every threat to children’s vision begins with a vision problem. Sports, recreation, household activities, and everyday play can lead to eye injuries, some of which can cause lasting vision loss.
Common pediatric eye injuries include:
- Corneal abrasions – Debris and small objects can scratch the eye’s surface, causing pain, tearing, and light sensitivity.
- Blunt trauma – Sports equipment and collisions can bruise the eye, cause hyphema (internal bleeding) or damage the retina.
- Penetrating injuries – Sharp objects, shattered glass, BBs, and fireworks can pierce the eye and require immediate emergency care.
- Chemical injuries – Household cleaners, pool chemicals, and school laboratory materials can quickly damage delicate eye tissue.
Healthcare providers, school health professionals, coaches, and caregivers can support prevention and response through:
