What are Community Health Centers?
Community Health Centers, or CHCs, are not-for-profit organizations that provide medical care to low-income patients who may not have health insurance. Anyone can use them, regardless of financial or insurance status. They use a sliding scale based on income and family size to determine what each patient pays.
In the Neighborhood: The Origins of CHCs
Prior to the 1960s, government-funded health clinics were not a widespread phenomenon. When Lyndon B. Johnson created a “War on Poverty” initiative to fund poverty reduction programs, a group of enterprising doctors took the opportunity to open two “neighborhood health centers,” one in Boston and one in Mound Bayou, Mississippi.
These centers went far beyond doling out bandages and prescriptions. They also worked to improve access to healthy food and clean drinking water and implemented a library and career training programs. After the success they demonstrated, the National Association of Community Health Centers was made permanent in 1971, and is still going strong today, driven by the same principles of accessible health and community resources.
Health Centers Today
A community health center today is often a bustling place. With a large range of services and specialties offered in one place, they’re often more like a one-stop shop for full body health than any typical doctor’s office.
Services that can be found under the roof of a CHC include:
- General Wellness: Patients can see a primary care physician or pediatrician, as well as visit the pharmacy, eye doctor, or dentist all in one day.
- Screening: Vaccines and flu and Covid tests are regularly offered at CHCs, alongside tests to check for cancers and such conditions as hypertension and diabetes.
- Specialized Care: Services such as gynecology, physical therapy, or chronic illness management can be tough to find in healthcare deserts, but CHCs help to bring them within reach.
- Behavioral Health: Today, mental health care is becoming more widely accepted than ever, and it’s not uncommon to find psychiatrists, therapists, counseling, and support groups at a community health center.
- Community Resources: Most CHCs take the community part of their name very seriously, offering classes, workshops, exercise groups, and even legal aid.
Quality of Care
Studies show that community health centers consistently provide high-quality care — comparable, or even better than private healthcare practices. In fact, within ten years of their widespread adoption, CHCs were shown to reduce mortality rates and improve crucial health markers in their communities — especially among adults over 50.
Today, CHCs remain sources of reliable medical care, regardless of circumstances, and leaders of these organizations are continuously looking for ways to improve. Current focus areas include increased training and education opportunities for staff, and an expansion of homecare offerings for patients.

Many doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers find CHCs to be rewarding places to work. Their not-for-profit model of care places patients at the center of everything, allowing providers to fulfill a deep desire to make a direct and meaningful impact.
These centers also offer rare diversity. With so many different specialists and experts together in one place, providers have a unique opportunity to debate and collaborate with their peers.
