Breast cancer is one of the most prevalent forms of cancer, affecting approximately 1 in 8 women nationwide. It’s a condition that not only significantly impacts patients, but also touches the lives of families, friends, and loved ones.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month provides an ideal opportunity to offer meaningful support to those affected by breast cancer, and to promote education about the importance of regular screening and early detection.
Advocating for Breast Health
Taking care of breast health is an essential part of overall wellness. Breast cancer may not initially exhibit any obvious signs or symptoms, underscoring the importance of early and regular screenings. For women with an average risk profile, the American Cancer Society recommends starting mammography screenings around age 40.
Remember, the decision as to when to start, and how often to receive mammograms should be based on your individual risk factors and consultation with a qualified healthcare provider. If you have concerns about your breast health or are experiencing symptoms, don’t hesitate to seek medical attention and advocate for your own well-being.
Strength in Support
While facing the challenges of breast cancer can seem overwhelming, seeking support from healthcare professionals and loved ones can make a significant difference. In fact, research indicates that social support plays a crucial role in enhancing one’s quality of life, promoting emotional well-being, and facilitating effective stress management. Support may come in various forms, including:
- Support Groups. When considering support groups, one can find a range of options to accommodate diverse needs, including both online and in-person formats. For example, the American Cancer Society’s Reach to Recovery Program facilitates one-on-one connections between patients and breast cancer survivors, offering personalized support and answers, while Stupid Cancer Support Groups offer a different approach, prioritizing fun and stigma-free connections.
- Social Media. Sharing content on social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, is a great resource for raising awareness and can offer a substantial level of support for those facing challenges related to breast cancer. A recent study found that a significant portion of content under the hashtag #breastcancer on TikTok focused on sharing patient journeys, coping strategies, and support systems. The potential for support to have far-reaching effects is amplified by TikTok’s extensive reach.

- Personalized Newsletters. Many organizations offer subscriptions to customized e-newsletters on a wide range of relevant topics—including updates on breast cancer treatment, the latest research and trends, as well as personal stories shared by survivors. Living Beyond Breast Cancer offers customizable options for breast cancer survivors and patient advocates. Other notable organizations with popular newsletters include BreastCancer.Org and Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
