Stand Up and Cheer for Your Pharmacist!

The history of the pharmacy profession spans hundreds, if not thousands of years–and is constantly evolving. Today, pharmacists are highly skilled experts who play a crucial role in healthcare throughout the United States and across the globe. National Pharmacist Day  (January 12) gives us the opportunity to learn more about the vital contributions of these amazing healthcare professionals – and how we can best benefit from the work that they do.

Dynarex offers a full line of pharmacy & retail supplies to keep pharmacists equipped with premium-quality products.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), around 50% of people in the United States are using at least one prescription drug. Lucky for us, pharmacists undergo extensive education to ensure patients are taking them safely and effectively. They are deeply knowledgeable about a wide range of concerns, including drug interactions, counter-indications, appropriate usage, and proper dosage.

A Patient-Focused Approach

You may have visited your pharmacist recently to pick up a prescription, but have you ever thought about asking them to explain to you what you’re taking? Pharmacists can help clear up any confusion and educate you on medication management, drug interaction, and pharmaceutical therapy — so don’t be shy to ask questions.

Pharmacists are not only there to dispense medication accurately and safely, they are also a valuable resource for you on a full range of health issues. In fact, most pharmacists offer private consultations during regular pharmacy hours. This gives you the opportunity to discuss any concerns, get clarification, and ask about your personal health problems.

Making Sense of the Fine Print

We all know that prescription sheets and warning labels can be difficult to read or understand, but you don’t have to do it alone. When starting a new medication, here are some questions that you might want to ask your pharmacist:

Can I take this with my other medications? Combining medications can have a substantial impact on the way your medications work – it could potentially worsen already existing medical conditions or create unexpected side effects. Be sure you fully understand any possible interactions.

Do I need to avoid certain food or drinks? Some foods and drinks can affect the breakdown, absorption, and excretion of medications. If necessary, your pharmacist can print a list for you to take home for easy reference.

How should I store this medication? Medication can lose its effectiveness if specific storage instructions aren’t followed, such as storing drugs in a cool, dry place.

Your Pharmacist Is Here to Help

The CDC states that nearly 90% of Americans live within five miles of a community pharmacy – and we should all take advantage of this fact. Remember, pharmacists are great resources when it comes to your medication, but their role doesn’t just stop there. This evolving profession is committed to focusing on helping patients live healthier lives. Today and every day is an opportunity to educate yourself on the benefits of having your pharmacist as one of your health care providers.
