What does “independence” mean to you? For many, it means being able to make choices about lifestyle, place of dwelling, and individual pursuits. But maintaining independence and having a fulfilling life in later years takes preparation and planning. That’s why National Senior Independence Month is observed every February to share information about resources, tools, and strategies that can help older adults live as independently as possible for as long as possible.

Staying Strong
As we age, our bodies change in ways that can limit our functionality—including weakened eyesight, reduced dexterity, and diminished sense of balance. These limitations can substantially increase the risk of falls – and decreased bone density can heighten the danger of severe injury as the result of a fall.
One way to help mitigate these risks is to build your strength and balance through exercise. A multicomponent physical activity program is recommended for older adults because it allows them to take advantage of several types of exercises in one session – aerobics to build stamina, muscle-strengthening to increase muscle mass, and balance to improve stability. (Remember, always consult a physician before embarking on a new exercise plan.)
Staying Safe
Another important factor in staying independent is ensuring that older adults live in a safe environment. There are a number of actions that seniors and caregivers can take to help achieve this. Here are a few ideas to consider:
Watch Your Step: Examine the home for tripping hazards such as clutter, loose extension cords, and stray items on the floor. Be sure area rugs are secured with rubber backing so there is no slippage. Consider installing night lights for hallways and restrooms to help avoid stumbling in the dark. Maintain Mobility: There are numerous assistive devices available today to help seniors maintain independence by providing support, stability, and improved mobility in the home. Whether it’s canes, crutches, walkers, or wheelchairs—there is a wide array to choose from to suit individual needs and preferences. Explore Smart Technology: Smart home devices can help make everyday tasks easier and safer. Automatic pill dispensers can be programmed to dispense correct dosages and send alerts when it’s time to take medication. Smart thermostats and ring cameras can help avoid unnecessary trips to adjust temperatures or answer the door. |
Staying Engaged
In addition to optimizing physical safety and well-being, staying mentally and socially engaged are huge factors in maintaining a healthy, fulfilling life. Today, it’s easier than ever to find online resources for entertainment, education, and social interaction. Local community centers and meetups also offer opportunities to meet new people and participate in meaningful activities.
Building Self-Reliance
National Senior Independence Month teaches that preparation is key to preserving a healthy and independent lifestyle. This month, let’s take the opportunity to educate ourselves about resources and strategies to help seniors maintain independence and enjoy the highest possible quality of life in the years ahead.
