It’s Time to Get Serious About Self-Care

What do you think of when you hear the phrase “self-care”? For many, images of expensive yoga retreats, aromatherapy treatments, and other pampering activities may come to mind. In short, we tend to equate “self-care” with “self-indulgence.”

But according to the International Self-Care Foundation (ISF), self-care is something more basic and essential to our overall health. It’s about taking greater responsibility for our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. With this in mind, the ISF established International Self-Care Day (ISD) to raise awareness about the importance of self-care and to encourage people to be active participants in their own wellness.

Self-Care: 24/7

The ISF designated the annual observance to take place on July 24 (7/24) to symbolize that self-care is a process that continues 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In other words, the benefits of self-care are life-long and not confined to a single day. Each year, self-care events take place in countries across the globe, including Australia, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Nepal, South Korea, and the United States, to name just a few.

The ISF points out that self-care is a normal part of everyday life in which everyone engages, consciously or unconsciously, regardless of their circumstances. To help provide more specific guidance, the organization established several basic pillars for effective self-care, including the following:

Dynarex offers a full line of personal care products to help you establish and maintain self-care practices that promote good health and well-being.

  • Health Literacy: According to the ISF, people with strong health literacy skills tend to enjoy a greater level of health and well-being than those with weaker skills. Good health literacy skills allow an individual to seek out reliable sources of health information and to better understand and interpret the information they receive.

  • Mental Wellbeing/Self Awareness: The ISF recommends engaging in regular health screenings and becoming familiar with your own personal health data such as body mass index (BMI), cholesterol level, and blood pressure.

  • Healthy Eating: ISF guidelines include establishing and maintaining a nutritious, balanced diet with appropriate levels of caloric intake for your specific health condition, body type, culture, and lifestyle.

  • Physical Activity: The ISF suggests participating in moderate exercise such as walking, cycling, or participating in sports at a pace suited to each person’s individual capabilities and fitness level.

  • Good Hygiene: This includes basic handwashing techniques, dental hygiene practices, and hygienic food preparation. Dynarex offers a wide selection of premium hygiene products, including SannyTize Instant Hand Sanitizer, to support your daily routine.

  • Responsible Use of Self-Care Products and Services: This practice combines researching the risks and benefits of available resources along with consulting appropriate medical professionals when needed.

Self-Care: A Balanced Approach

As the ISF points out, “self-care” does not mean “no-care,” nor does it mean going it alone. It simply means becoming as knowledgeable as possible about our healthcare options and maintaining healthy daily practices. With the support of community resources and healthcare professionals, practicing self-care can help us optimize our health and well-being daily and at every stage of life.
